Biggest Stories of the Round

Paris Saint-Germain dominate Manchester City
PSG raced into a 3-0 lead before half-time with goals from Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha. Although Erling Haaland pulled two back, Maghnes Akliouche’s strike secured a 4-2 win for the holders at the Etihad. It was a clear statement from Luis Enrique’s side and left Manchester City with work to do.

Real Madrid’s late comeback in Rome
José Mourinho’s Roma led 3-1 with under ten minutes remaining after Donyell Malen’s double. Real Madrid then scored three times in the final eight minutes — through Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger — all from corners, to snatch a 4-3 victory. Kylian Mbappé marked his 100th Champions League appearance with a goal earlier in the game.

Liverpool and Aston Villa run riot
Bradley Barcola scored a hat-trick as Liverpool thrashed LASK 6-3 in Austria. At Villa Park, Aston Villa recorded the biggest European win in their history with a 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahçe. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley both scored twice.

Other notable results
Bodø/Glimt claimed a shock 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona and Arsenal both stayed perfect with comfortable victories, while Bayern Munich dropped points in a 3-3 draw at Viking and Manchester United lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid. Inter Milan suffered a 4-3 home defeat to Club Brugge.

Talking Points After Matchday 2

Barcelona, Arsenal, Sporting CP and now Paris Saint-Germain all sit on six points. Aston Villa’s 6-0 win also puts them firmly in the conversation after two matches. Bayern’s draw and Manchester City’s defeat mean both sides will need strong responses in the coming weeks.

The goal volume was exceptional. Six of the nine Wednesday fixtures produced five or more goals, underlining the open, attacking nature of the early league phase.

Real Madrid’s resilience in the closing stages will give them belief, while Manchester United and Inter Milan already face pressure after losing both of their opening fixtures.
